“Badminton has given me the opportunity to grow as a person” – Angela Scherer

Each sporting event has many people involved in areas such as finance, logistics, marketing, etc., areas that are often not as recognized, but have great professionals involved. Angela Scherer is one of these people who work hard for the benefit of our sport and the development of Brazilian badminton.

Financial administrative manager of the Brazilian Badminton Confederation (CBBd), Angela knew badminton due to the sporting events that were held in her country and has been involved with our sport for several years.

“I started in 2013, a few years ago. I got to know badminton through Professor Eliseu, in Foz de Iguazu. I worked in a hotel that had a very large event center and Professor Eliseu went there to get to know the place and hold a championship. It was there that we began to talk and he explained the sport to me little by little.”

Working in a public institution has many challenges and, among them, managing finances. Sometimes the number of projects you want to do are diminished by a lower budget than desired. Angela recognizes that working in Brazilian sports is a daily challenge but rewarding for the results that can be obtained.

“Working in sports is something of daily challenges. Managing a company with available resources for everything you want to do is very easy. But managing a company where the money is exact, with specific destinations, is complicated. Growing Brazilian sport is a daily challenge. It’s very rewarding and challenging to be able to work on it.”

In each job there are complicated situations to face, whether professionally, personally or socially. Sport is no stranger to it, and badminton also has tricky situations in every area. Angela experienced a little of it when she started in the sports industry, an environment in which men predominate but which also requires the presence of women.

“I have been working in sports for some time, people know me and respect me a lot, but starting in a predominantly male area is a bit difficult, you have to work and always show that you know how to work. We women have to work a little harder to show how competent we are and not focus on the fact that it is a woman who holds that position. I have no complaints, everyone is very respectful to me, but the reality that is faced in sport is that.”

Being recognized for her work, being able to overcome new challenges and grow together with the Brazilian sport have been some of the things that Angela has enjoyed about badminton during these years.

“Badminton has given me the opportunity to grow as a person. Here we work with many difficult situations and we see, for example, that little boy, who is from a social project and does not have money to travel, does not have sponsorship or that opportunity, but he is trying and trying with all his effort. So seeing that, people who have less than one and are fighting for their dreams and achieving their goals, that makes me think that I can also try things and achieve them.”
