Para badminton athletes from Brazil, Peru and United States took the podiums at TOTAL BWF Para badminton World Championships 2019, held in Basel, Switzerland.

Pan Am’s First World Champion
Peru’s Giuliana Poveda became Pan Am’s first Para badminton world champion after defeating the defending champion, Rachel Choong (ENG) by 21-9 and 21-19. Poveda participated in her second World Championship and she scored victories against players from United States, Poland, Ukraine, Egypt and England, reaching the podium top.
“This has been my dream for two years since I lost to Rachel in Korea. I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life, to be the World Champion,” said the new SS6 World Champion.
Poveda also took the podium in Women’s Doubles with Katherine Valli (USA). Our duo Pan Am won the silver medal after defeating duos from Poland, the United States and Russia to reach the final where they could not defeat the England duo Bedford / Choong, winning second place in this category. Katherine Valli won bronze medal in Singles after losing to Rachel in Semifinals.
Three Medals for Tavares
Vitor Tavares (BRA) won 3 bronze medals during this World Championship. Our Pan Am Champion was able to reach the podium in Singles, where he defeated outstanding athletes from Scotland, USA, Canada and England but losing against Chun Yim Wong from Hong Kong in Semifinals.
Our Pan Am Para badminton players added importants points in their Road to Tokyo 2020 and some of them are preparing to compete at Parapan Am Games 2019 this week in Lima, Peru.
