The Reign Continues – Pan Am Team 2019

Canada won its 11th crown in a row after defeat United States at XXIII Pan Am Mixed Team Championships 2019, held in Lima, Peru, from February 14 to 17.

Without losing a single match during the competition, Canada won the Pan American Cup thanks to the great performance of its athletes, led by the experienced coach Mike Butler.

In an exciting final tie, Team USA and Canada showed their best game and filled the tournament with excitement. Phillip Chew and Breanna Chi were close to winning in the first match, against Joshua Hulburt-Yu and Josephine Wu after winning the firts game. But Canadian duo was able to force third game and won it (15-21, 21-18 & 21-13).

Brittney Tam and Brian Yang won the Singles matches to sealed the victory.

“We are very capable but we never take anything for granted. Things can happen depending on how people play and I trusted a good victory today. I am always very excited about the team events because Canada shows our depth in our program and not only an athlete is doing well, it is a team of athletes who do well to win the gold here. I am very proud of the team and how they do it and it is something I never take for granted. We had to work hard in two years and now we will work hard again. ” said Butler who won one more crown as a Canada’s coach.

Team Canada received the gold medals received the medals from the Badminton Pan Am president’s hands, Mr. Vishu Tolan, who led the award ceremony with Mr. Zarko Cukic, BPAC Events Director, and Mr. Javier Jimeno, representative of Peru Badminton Federation.

Team USA had in mind to reach the podium and they achieved it led by Olympic players Phillip Chew and Jennie Gai.

Brazil is now the third best team of our region and they will continue improving to win gold next time.

The award Ceremony had a special recognition to Peru Badminton Federation for host this event.

Line judges also received a certificate for participating in a training course for the Pan American Games Lima 2019.
