“There is no greater thing than to be able to play, participate and develop the sports which also contributes to the community”- Su Ying Lau

Badminton Coach, Shuttle Time National Coordinator and Secretary of the Aruba Badminton Federation, started in our sport very young and learned more about it at the University in Netherlands.

“I started playing badminton at a local club when I was very young. When I went to university in Rotterdam (the Netherlands), I joined a university badminton club where I was very active in organizing and playing tournaments and competition. Soon after I moved to Aruba, I started coaching and I also became the Secretary General of the Aruba Badminton Federation.”

Su Ying is always looking forward to further training and willing to share her badminton knowledge in the various places she has been.

“Badminton has brought me to many cities locally and abroad where I have met awesome people and made many friends. I always look forward to the next trip whether it is for a tournament, training course or meeting.”

In her various roles with badminton, Su Ying has been able to experience various good and bad situations that have led her to enjoy badminton at every stage. As a player, as a coach and as a manager she has broadened her vision of our sport which has given her incredible moments.

“There are many awesome moments in my badminton life. What I really like is that I can experience badminton in the broadest spectrum. As a player I have been enjoying it as recreative and competitive player. As a coach I can develop players at the same time I am learning many new soft skills as well. As a board member with different roles, I can focus on developing badminton on the island and organize tournaments and many activities. Badminton for me is pretty much all-round fun.”

Su Ying led the Aruba team at the I Pan Am Junior Games Cali 2021, assuming a great challenge due to the level of competition they attended, but also surprising with the good performance that the Aruba team reached during this event.

“As Aruba we qualified for the I Junior Pan-American Games in Cali 2021. For our players and I as a coach, major steps had to be made within the training program to have the best possible preparation in a short time. At the beginning I had no idea what type of training was needed since this was the first time to coach players for such a high-level event. The first thing that I did was reaching out to all the badminton experts in my network to ask for their guidance and support. Without this fantastic support it would have taken me much more time before getting the players up to speed with the on-court and off-court training. The second challenge was the combination of a regular full time office job with being a coach of an intensive training program. Keeping being motivated myself and bringing the best out of the players every single training was not easy. However, seeing the players making big progress and working as a team kept us going strong. This was the first time for me to see how hard work can really pay off.”

Having lived the close experience of being involved in badminton from different roles, Su Ying encourages all people to join in the development of their communities through sport.

“There is no greater thing than to be able to play, participate and develop the sports which also contributes to the community. Gender is not an issue unless you make it one yourself. When you love your badminton, go for it and just do it.”
