From September 19 to 23 the IX International Mexicano 2018 was played, with the participation of more than 120 outstandings badminton players from Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Italy, Jamaica, Peru , Portugal, Romania, United States, Suriname and host Mexico.
The Olympic Gymnasium in Aguascalientes, Mexico, saw the victories of Kevin Cordon (GUA), Taymara Oropesa (CUB), Fabricio Farias, Lohaynny Vicente, Francielton Farias and Luana Vicente (BRA).
Guatemala’s star, Kevin Cordon, won his second consecutive title in Mexico, after beating Maximme Moriels (BEL) 21-19 and 21-14 in the final. In the semifinals, Cordon had defeated Osleni Guerrero (CUB), who won the bronze medal with Harshit Aggarwal (IND).
Taymara Oropesa (CUB) prevented Jennie Gai (USA) from repeating the result of last year and this time she won after 3 hard-fought games (13-21, 21-18 and 21-19). Daniela Macias and Jaqueline Lima completed the podium of this modality.
Brazil won in Doubles. Fabricio Farias and Francielton Farias climbed to the top of the men’s doubles podium after beating locals Andres Lopez and Luis Montoya by 21-15 and 24-22. On the women’s side, Lohaynny Vicente and Luana Vicente were crowned champions after defeating Daniela Macias and Danica Nishimura (PER) in the longest match of the final day (1 hour of play).
Job Castillo and Cynthia Gonzalez were very close to getting a gold medal for Mexico, however they could not beat Venkat Prasad and Juhi Dewangan from India and fell after 3 hard-fought games (18-21, 22-20 and 21-15 ).
