Pan Am athletes started the qualification period for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in a good way after getting on the podium at the 34th Brazil International Challenge 2019, held in Campinas, Brazil, from May 1 to 5, with participation of outstanding badminton players from 36 differents countries.
Rachel Honderich and Kristen TsaiĀ got their second consecutive gold this year. The first at XXIII Pan Am Individual Championships 2019 and now this in Brazil, where they overcoming duos from Peru and Netherlands, and the top seed, Lefel / Tran (FRA) in the final after 3 hard games.
Kristen Tsai also managed to get on the podium in Mixed Doubles along with Nyl Yakura. The Canadian duo came to the semifinals after their victories against the duos of USA and Brazil, however they could not beat Tabeling / Piek (NED), who turned out to be champions of the tournament.
Ygor Coelho (BRA) won the bronze medal in Singles after falling to the young promise, Brian Yang (CAN) in Semifinals.
Shinning Stronger
Youth Olympic player, Brian Yang continues to surprise in his career and this time he won the silver medal after beating outstanding players such as Kevin Gordon (GUA), Pablo Abian (ESP) and Ygor Coelho (BRA).
Yang started the tournament in MS-Qualification rounds, achieving 2 victories and settling in the Main Draw.
There, he beat the Pan Am Games 2015 champion, Kevin Gordon, in 3 tough games (21-11, 20-22, 21-18). Then, only two games (21-16 & 21-17 against Michal Rogalski) were enough to reach Quarterfinals where he beat the experienced Spanish athlete Pablo Abian (21-19 and 22-20). In Semifinals he faced Ygor Coelho, defending champion and Pan Am ranked No. 1, where after a tough game, the Canadian was left with the victory (21-19, 13-21, 21-17) and the pass to the final . Misha Zilberman (ISR) did not allow Yang to continue the winning streak and won by 21-17 and 22-20.
Our athletes continue to add experience and points focused on their major objectives such as the upcoming Pan American Games and qualification to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Thus, now they are preparing to participate in the next Pan Am Circuit event, the Peru Future Series 2019.
