Jamaica’s Katherine Wynter met badminton at 10 years old. Her interest in our sport began when she saw her dad play. Now, she is the racket number 1 in her country and has competed in different international tournaments enjoying our sport.
“I would say the best thing the sport has given me is the ability to represent my country and hold my country’s flag on the podium. Also to meet so many people across the world.”
With only 23 years of age, Katherine works as a Personnel Officer in the Human Resource Department of a government institution, but she shares her job with her own sporting dreams.
“As a long term objective, I want to represent Jamaica in an Olympic Games, and in short term, I would like to win the Carebaco Competition.”
From her beginnings in badminton, Katherine faced different difficulties to continue training and growing in our sport. However, she was able to overcome each of, as she calls them, ‘challenges’.
“I have faced many challenges. One of my biggest challenges is that we train on concrete and it is a hard transition to go into an international competition and play on mats.”
Wynter obtained her best position in the World Ranking in September 2018 and continues to strive to be able to better herself every day. The experience that our sport has given allows her to encourage all women interested in sports and enjoy it as much as she does.
“For any woman that wants to take part in sport I say go for it! Sport is an amazing way to keep fit, have fun and challenge yourself to see how good you are.“
