YOG2018: Aaron Lee – Badminton Peru Coach

Buenos Aires 2018 already culminated but is important to highlight our Pan Am Coaches who also played important roles during this event.

Aaron Lee, Badminton Peru Coach, is from Malaysia and was at Youth Olympic Games 2018 with Fernanda Saponara sharing his experience and kwonledge for the participation of Fernanda on the courts.

Let’s know more about Aaron and his experience in Buenos Aires 2018:

How were the days in Buenos Aires?

“This trip to Buenos Aires was good. It is a nice country that was prepared for the games and was very up to the Olympic Games. Above all it was a good organization.”

Was the objective met?

“Definitely met my goals that my player was exposed to the international competing arena. She (Fernanda) was exposed to different game standards and had the opportunity to play and partner with players from different countries. However, I must say personally that my player’s goal of playing at the level that I expected was not met because she was suffering from a knee injury before the Games.”

For you, what has been the best of these Olympic Games?

“The best was, of course, the whole experience of being in Olympic Games, I loved the whole organization. I also loved that my player now has an idea of what she needs to do, back home, in terms of training so she can match the standards of the top-notch players on the court.”

After this experience, what’s next for you as a coach?

“The biggest takeaway from this experience was the level of junior players around the world and it serves as a yardstick or a baseline of where Peru stands amongst them. My first move would be to increase the intensity of the training, especially in physical fitness and agility terms.  Also, bring psychological aspects so that players are more focused and can perform under tremendous pressure.”

Aaron also has the responsibility to continue preparing the Peruvian players for the next tournaments in which they will compete as the World Junior Championships 2018 and Pan Am Games Lima 2019.
